'The being whom you saw in the shape of a mortar was also once a monk. A task with bowls had arisen for him, and a novice monk there, an Arhat, had been appointed to the turn of marking with seals. He was told by that monk, "Novice, pound the chalk and give it to me." He said, "Elder, wait a moment; I am busy. Afterward, having pounded it, I will give it." Overcome with anger, he said, "Novice, if it were permissible for me to touch a mortar, I would throw you into the mortar and pound you, let alone the chalk!" That novice reflected: "He is overcome by an intense active affliction. If I give him an answer, he will become even more enraged"; so he remained silent. When his active affliction had subsided, then [the novice] approached and said, "Elder, do you know who I am?" He replied, "I know that you are a novice monk gone forth under the perfectly awakened Kāśyapa; I too am an elder monk." The novice said, "Even if that is so, nevertheless, what was to be done by one who has gone forth has been done by me. What has been done? The abandonment of afflictions: I have severed all bonds, completely freed from all bondage! You have uttered harsh verbal karma. Confess your transgression as a transgression! Hopefully this karma may reach exhaustion, diminution, and end." He did not confess his transgression as a transgression. Due to that karma, he became one who has the shape of a mortar.'
