A root downfall is also stated in the Upāyakauśalyasūtra: “Moreover, noble son, if a bodhisattva training in the prātimokṣa training should eat roots and fruits even for a hundred thousand kalpas, and endure the well-spoken and ill-spoken words of all sentient beings, yet dwell with mental attentions connected to the grounds of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, this is a heavy root downfall for a bodhisattva. Just as, noble son, a follower of the Śrāvakayāna who has fallen into a root downfall is incapable of attaining parinirvāṇa with those very aggregates; just so, noble son, without confessing this downfall and without relinquishing those mental attentions of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, he is incapable of attaining parinirvāṇa on the buddha-ground.”
