"Such is this region of Avīci, measuring three hundred thousand leagues, named the Terrifying-Winged Birds. There, together with those other hell beings, he is devoured and regenerated for many hundreds of thousands of years. If he is somehow freed from that, surrounded by a complete web of suffering, he goes to a second region named the Precipitous Chasm. Seeking protection, seeking refuge, seeking shelter, enveloped on all sides by eleven masses of flame, helpless, bound with the bonds of the noose of karma, surrounded on all sides by enemies, fallen into a wilderness, having incurred a disaster greater than any mass of hells, he runs toward that region named the Precipitous Chasm. When his foot steps down, it melts away completely; when lifted up, it regenerates again, extremely delicate and soft, yet overcome by harsh, intense sufferings. As he whose face is thus distorted by terror, whose hands, feet, limbs, and minor limbs are melting away, that region named the Precipitous Chasm manifests. He falls into that place, and having fallen, plunges into the chasm for three thousand leagues. Again he is tossed up by a wind generated by karma. As he plunges, he is devoured by herons, crows, vultures, and owls. Thus many hundreds of thousands of years pass for him as he is tossed up and falls down. If he is somehow freed from that, driven about, he runs toward a region named the Wheel-Marked Cavity. And in that region, thousand-spoked wheels appear, with vajra hubs, sharp flames, and swift rotation; as soon as he arrives, those wheels reach his body and whirl around." […]
