179. These four āgama (Tib. lung), or discourses, still form the core of the Pali canon’s Sūtrapiṭaka. By assigning their recitation and memorization to young nāgas, the shape shifter was taking a concrete step towards establishing the Buddha’s sūtras in the land of the nāgas, the express purpose for abducting Saṅgharakṣita.
