At that time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī, at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma. At that time, the group-of-six bhikṣus, having an occasion of circumstance, went to lodge overnight in the army. Householders saw them and said among themselves: 'We lodge here for the sake of affection and love, but what are these śramaṇas doing here again?' The bhikṣus heard this, and among them those of few desires, contented, practicing dhūta, delighting in training in the precepts, and knowing shame, reproached the group-of-six bhikṣus, saying: 'The Bhagavat laid down the precept that only on an occasion of circumstance may one go to the army; how could you stay overnight in the army?' Then the bhikṣus went to the Bhagavat and reported this matter fully to the Bhagavat. On this account the Bhagavat assembled the saṅgha of bhikṣus and rebuked the group-of-six bhikṣus: 'What you have done is improper, not deportment, not the Dharma of a śramaṇa, not pure conduct, not compliant conduct, what should not be done. Why, bhikṣus of the group of six, when there is an occasion of circumstance allowing one to go to the army, for what reason did you lodge overnight in the army?' Having rebuked the group-of-six bhikṣus with countless expedients, the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: 'These foolish men have produced many kinds of āsrava-bases, being the first to violate the precept. From this day forward, I lay down the precept for the bhikṣus, gathering the ten objectives up to the long endurance of the true Dharma. Those who wish to recite the precept should recite it thus: "If a bhikṣu has an occasion of circumstance, he is permitted to go to the army for two nights or three nights; if he exceeds that, it is a pāyattika."'
