At that time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma. At that time, the Venerable Udāyin knew in advance that the Bhagavat would certainly come along this road, and right on the road he set out a high and fine couch. Udāyin saw the Bhagavat coming from afar and addressed the Buddha, saying: 'Let the Bhagavat look at my couch! Let the Sugata look at my couch!' The Buddha said: 'Know that this foolish man harbors depravity and evil within.' At that time, the Bhagavat, on account of this circumstance, assembled the bhikṣu-saṅgha and addressed the bhikṣus: 'This foolish man Udāyin has set out a high, broad, and large couch solely for himself.' At that time, having rebuked Udāyin with countless expedient means, the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: 'This foolish man is a locus for many kinds of āsravas, and is the first to violate the precepts. From now on, I lay down this precept for the bhikṣus, bringing together the ten objectives, and so on up to the long endurance of the True Dharma. Those who wish to recite the precepts should recite them thus: "If a bhikṣu makes a rope couch or a wooden bed, the legs should be eight fingers of the Sugata high, after cutting off the portion above the mortise opening. If it exceeds this, it is a pāyattika."'"
