Thus the Bhagavat laid down the precept for the bhikṣus. At that time, a householder made an open invitation to a bhikṣu, asking: "What kind of robe do you need?" That bhikṣu had doubts and did not answer. If a householder makes an open invitation, when asking for a robe the bhikṣu should answer. At that time, the householder wished to make an expensive robe for the bhikṣu, but this bhikṣu had few desires and was content; he did not need an expensive robe, but needed an inferior one. The bhikṣu had doubts and did not dare to ask for it as he wished. The Buddha said: "I allow bhikṣus who have few desires and are content to ask for an inferior one. From this day forth, the precept should be recited thus: 'Whatever bhikṣu, when two householders or householders' wives prepare robe-funds for the bhikṣu, thinking: "With this robe-fund we will buy such a robe and give it to bhikṣu so-and-so"; if that bhikṣu, not having previously accepted an open invitation from the householders, goes to the homes of the two householders and speaks thus: "It would be good indeed, householders, if you would prepare such-and-such robe-funds for me and together make a single robe," desiring something fine—if he obtains the robe, it is a niḥsargika-pāyattika.'"
