“In a past life, in Jambudvīpa,
I was born into a brāhmaṇa family, intelligent and exceptionally clever.
At that time a neighbouring king sent his daughter in betrothal to me,
Yet this woman was unchaste and had secret relations with another man.
I waited and captured her, and had her beheaded in the city marketplace;
Despising and reviling her then, I sent her back to her native land.
Reflecting on the foulness of desire, I left household life to practice the true path,
Yet I again encountered bad companions and found no good fellow students,
Who led me into the company of courtesans. Sorrowful and full of resentment,
I slit my throat with a blade and passed through the suffering of the three bad destinies;
From this I received a nāga body, suffering agony beyond words.”
