"In a past life of mine,
Once in Jambudvīpa,
I was the son of a brāhmaṇa family,
Intelligent and exceedingly clever.
At that time, the daughter of a neighboring king
Came to be wed as my wife.
This woman was unchaste,
Secretly having intercourse with another outside.
I then watched and caught her,
Executing her in the marketplace;
I then, detesting that bandit,
Sent her [corpse] back to her native country.
Contemplating lust as vile and impure,
I went forth to practice the correct path;
Yet I again met bad companions,
Not encountering good fellow-students,
Who led me among lustful people. At that time, full of grief, regret, and hatred,
I slit my throat with a blade and died,
Undergoing the suffering of the three wretched realms,
And from this received a dragon body,
So painful that words cannot tell."
