The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'You should receive, hold, read, recite, master, explain to others, copy, and make offerings to this dhāraṇī. Why? The appearance of a buddha in the world is difficult [to encounter], and to hear and retain this mantra is likewise exceedingly difficult. Ānanda! If there is someone who receives, holds, reads, recites, masters, explains to others, copies, and makes offerings to this dhāraṇī, fire cannot burn them, water cannot drown them, poison cannot affect them, enemies cannot harm them, kings cannot execute them, and Brahmā, Śakra, and the devas will not resent or despise them; they will be able to remember their births for seven lifetimes. Ānanda! This dhāraṇī was spoken by seventy-seven billion past buddhas. If anyone violates this mantra or one who holds it, seizing their vital essence to cause them ruin and affliction, they will thereby be violating and defying these buddhas.'
