The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'You should receive, hold, read, recite, master, explain to others, copy, and make offerings to this dhāraṇī. Why? The appearance of a buddha in the world is difficult [to encounter], and to hear and retain this mantra is likewise exceedingly difficult. If there is someone who receives, holds, reads, recites, explains to others, copies, and makes offerings to this dhāraṇī, they will be able to remember their births for twelve lifetimes. Ānanda! This mantra was spoken by eighty-two billion past buddhas. If anyone violates this mantra or one who holds it, seizing their vital essence to cause them ruin and affliction, they will thereby be defying these buddhas.'
