Then, having received this dhāraṇī from the Buddha, the Dharma Prince Mañjuśrī went to the host of māras where Ānanda was and spoke these words: 'Host of māras and your retinues, listen attentively to the great dhāraṇī-phrases I proclaim!' Having heard them, the māra kings all gave rise to the aspiration for anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, abandoned their māra deeds, and immediately released Ānanda. Hearing the name of this dhāraṇī, there is no one who does not reverently receive and hold it. This dhāraṇī was proclaimed in common by past buddhas, World-Honoured Ones equal in number to the sands of ten Ganges Rivers; it can transform a female body, and enables one to know their own past lives. One must observe five practices: first, celibacy (brahmacarya); second, abstaining from meat; third, abstaining from alcohol; fourth, abstaining from the five pungent roots; fifth, taking pleasure in tranquil seclusion. Those who faithfully accept, copy, read, and recite this dhāraṇī with a sincere mind should know that they will transcend seventy-seven billion wretched and evil bodies.
