"Joining the ten fingernails of our palms, we make offerings to the Lion of the Śākyas.
I now wish to recite the śīla; the saṅgha should listen single-mindedly.
Even toward minor offenses, in mind one should have great fear.
Where there is an offense, single-mindedly confess it, and never commit it again hereafter.
The mind-horse gallops along evil paths; pramāda is hard to restrain.
The Buddha declared the keen practice of śīla to be like sharp reins and a bridle.
When the Buddha's mouth preaches admonitions, the good can faithfully accept them;
Such a person's horse is well-tamed, able to defeat the army of kleśas.
If one does not accept instructions and does not delight in the śīla,
Such a person's horse is untamed, sinking into the army of kleśas.
If a person guards the śīla as a yak cherishes its tail,
Binding the mind without pramāda, like a monkey wearing a chain,
Constantly diligent day and night for the sake of seeking true wisdom,
Such a person within the Buddha's Dharma is able to attain a pure life."
