The middling renunciants have just received full ordination, and being not yet fully conversant with the deportment and rules of a śramaṇa, they must rely on senior, venerable ones possessed of virtuous conduct. Therefore Upāli asked the Buddha: “Having accomplished how many dharmas is one completely exempt from niśraya?” The Buddha answered: “Generally, having accomplished twenty-five dharmas, one does not rely on niśraya.” To speak of them broadly, there are twenty-five dharmas; to speak of them essentially, only being able to understand the two sets of precepts is fundamental, and at present, accomplishing only ten dharmas [is required].
