In the bhikṣusaṅgha, there are seven persons who should not serve as vihārapāla or duty officer of the day: first, those of old age incapable of duties; second, those with illness, rashes, and sores who are unclean; third, those who have been chronically ill and extremely emaciated; fourth, those assigned by the community to care for the sick; fifth, the sthavira of the day; sixth, the karmadāna; seventh, the duty officer of the year. None of these seven persons should serve. If there are strong and capable persons who contrary to duty do not wish to serve, one should not reprimand and question them; this itself is a treasure storehouse for future lives.
