問：「沙彌犯十戒，或一二三不悔，受大戒得不？」答：「若憶而不懺，不得。都不憶，又不知法，已受得。夫受戒法師應問沙彌：『汝犯戒不？』若言：『犯。』即應教懺。若本師不問，壇上師應問。若都不問，師犯墮。」

Question: "If a śrāmaṇera violates the ten precepts, or violates one, two, or three, and does not repent, does he obtain the full precepts [if he receives them]?" Answer: "If he remembers but does not confess, he does not obtain them. If he does not remember at all and also does not know the Dharma, having received them, he obtains them. As a rule, the precept-transmitting master should ask the śrāmaṇera: 'Have you broken the precepts?' If he says, 'I have,' he should immediately instruct him to confess. If his original master does not ask, the master on the platform should ask. If neither asks at all, the masters commit an offence of pātayantika."
