Question: "May one lean an object against a Buddha wall?" Answer: "One may not; it incurs a naiḥsargika-pāyattika. In ancient times, there was a bhikṣu who entered a monastery to pay homage to the Buddha. There was a brāhmaṇa skilled in physiognomy who examined the bhikṣu and found he had the marks of a prince of heaven. He then said to the bhikṣu, 'I have a daughter whom I will give in marriage to you, Bhikṣu.' The bhikṣu said, 'Wait until I return from paying homage to the Buddha.' The bhikṣu then leaned his khakkhara against the stūpa wall, entered the monastery, paid homage to the Buddha, and came back out. The brāhmaṇa would no longer speak with him. The bhikṣu asked, 'Will you still give me your daughter?' The brāhmaṇa said, 'I will not.' The brāhmaṇa said, 'Previously I saw that you had noble marks, and therefore I offered her; now you no longer have these marks, and for that reason I will not give her. The reason it is so is that your merit has been eradicated.' For this reason, one must not lean objects against a Buddha wall or the wall of a stūpa; it not only violates the precepts, but also eradicates one's immeasurable merit."
