Question: "How is the demarcation of a sīmā performed?" Answer: "The method of demarcating a sīmā: in uninhabited places such as mountains and marshes, it may be as far or near as one pleases. If in towns, cities, or villages, one must not demarcate it too far away, nor may one demarcate it at night. When demarcating it, bhikṣus must stand at the four corners, and outsiders must not be allowed to enter; if an outsider enters, the sīmā is not validly formed. First demarcate the sīmā grounds: gather all the laypeople, slaves, and servants of the saṃgha onto the sīmā grounds, and then survey the four directions. When demarcating the sīmā, exclude four places: first, villages; second, secular people's fields and places of regular work outside the village; third, if there is an araṇya [dweller] living alone in the mountains and marshes, who fears that at the time of reciting the precepts and performing karmans various obstacles and difficulties may prevent him from coming, he announces to the saṃgha and requests to establish a separate small sīmā; if the saṃgha consents, and there is no five-member saṃgha there, monks should be dispatched to establish a separate sīmā for him—this refers to the dwelling place of an araṇya dweller; fourth, the ordination platform: when demarcating the sīmā previously, this text excludes it equally—demarcating an ordination platform, except when demarcating the sīmā for this purpose; or one first establishes the great sīmā and later demarcates the ordination platform, receiving ordination within it. As the boundary official said, it is feared that nothing would be gained. Yet saying one does not know is the same as taking a separate view to show commonality; in this path there may be good fortune. That person said: if there is a sick bhikṣu who cannot go into the saṃgha, and he requests to establish a sīmā in a separate room, the saṃgha should also consent. First dissolve the great sīmā, establish the separate sīmā for him, and after that establish the great sīmā; all bhikṣus who do not take their robes may enter it at night. In a single dwelling place that has a sīmā, a single bhikṣu may also strike the ghaṇṭā and extensively recite the precepts; first repenting towards the saṃgha of the four quarters, and then reciting; or he may make three declarations. 'Three declarations' means reciting three times."
