The Buddha said to Śraddhāpradāna Bodhisattva: "What you previously asked regarding the meaning and marks—namely, the meaning and marks of the ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, ten grounds, the Stainless Ground, and the Ground of Wondrous Enlightenment—shall now be explained. O Son of the Buddha! In this Vajra-Ocean Treasury Adornment Sūtra, which explains the meaning and marks of the worthy and noble ones, the meaning emerges from the essence. 'Essence' means the essence of the bodhisattva; 'meaning' is named merit. These two dharmas serve as the essence and the meaning for all bodhisattvas; hence it is called 'essence and meaning.'
