2.13

我所以慇懃囑累阿難者，過去諸佛雖有侍者，無如阿難知佛意趣，曩昔已曾供養二十億佛常為侍者不求盡漏，常願得等智知佛意趣。以是故今獲其報，覩目達意不失宜則。

The reason I earnestly entrusted Ānanda is that although past Buddhas had attendants, none was like Ānanda in knowing the Buddha's intent. In the past he had already made offerings to two billion Buddhas, constantly serving as an attendant without seeking the exhaustion of outflows, constantly vowing to attain equal knowledge and know the Buddhas' intent. Because of this, he now obtains his reward: looking into my eyes, he grasps my intent without missing the proper measure.
