婆伽婆者，世尊之稱也。結使都盡，無能過者，故稱為尊。三界諸天皆來師仰，八部鬼神亦所宗敬，故稱世尊。能降伏魔，即復是尊。如是所稱不可計量，故號世尊也。

'Bhagavān' is an appellation of the World-Honoured One. His fetters are completely exhausted, and none can surpass him, so he is called 'Honoured'. The devas of the three realms all come to look up to him as their master, and the ghosts and spirits of the eight classes also revere him, so he is called 'World-Honoured'. Being able to subdue Māra, he is again 'Honoured'. Appellations such as these are immeasurable, hence he is titled 'World-Honoured'.
