4.12

身子所以稱智慧第一者，世尊又云：「欲知身子智慧多少者，以須彌為硯子、四大海水為書水、以四天下竹木為筆、滿中人為書師，欲寫身子智慧者猶尚不能盡，況凡夫五通而能測量耶？」故稱智慧為第一。

The reason why Śāriputra is declared foremost in wisdom is that the World-Honoured One also said: 'If one wished to know the extent of Śāriputra's wisdom, taking Mount Sumeru as the inkstone, the waters of the four great oceans as the ink water, the bamboo and trees of the four continents as brushes, and all the people filling them as scribes, even if they wished to write down Śāriputra's wisdom, they still could not exhaust it—how much less could an ordinary person with the five supernormal faculties fathom it?' Therefore, he is declared foremost in wisdom.
