The reason why the monk Nanda is proclaimed foremost in handsome appearance is that the monks each had distinct marks: Śāriputra had seven, Maudgalyāyana had five, Ānanda had twenty, and Nanda alone had thirty marks. Nanda was golden in color, and Ānanda was silver in color. In radiant robes and gold-embroidered shoes, holding a lapis lazuli bowl, he would enter the city to beg for food, and none who saw him were not delighted. Setting aside the Tathāgata, none of the other disciples could match him; therefore he is proclaimed foremost in handsome appearance. It is also said that his faculties were serene. Once the Buddha led the disciples to the mango girl's vihāra in Vaiśālī. At that time, Nanda was walking outside in meditation. Hearing that the Buddha had arrived, the mango girl was delighted in her heart; wishing to provide a humble offering, she went to invite the Buddha. Outside, she saw Nanda walking in meditation, and deep affection arose in her. Touching his feet in veneration, she rubbed his feet with her hands. Although he beheld her beautiful form, he was serene and free of desire, yet because body and form stimulated each other, he had an emission of impurity. Sweet tastes nourish the body; when the body is full, it overflows. How could an overflow of impurity be caused by the mind? The mango girl did not understand and suspected he had lustful thoughts. The Buddha knew her thoughts and told the mango girl: 'Do not harbor doubts. Seven days from now, Nanda will become an arhat.' From this it is known that his mind was unwavering.
