According to this treatise, the Dan edition of the canon has three fascicles, whereas the Kaiyuan Catalogue states four fascicles, noting that some editions have three or five fascicles; this is merely a difference in the division of fascicles, with no addition or deletion in the text. In the catalogue there is a descriptive note saying: "This treatise explains the meaning of the Ekottarāgama. From the opening 'Preface Chapter' to more than halfway through the 'Disciples Chapter', it ends with the monk King of the Śākyas." The Fashang Catalogue says: "Translated by Dharmarakṣa." This is not correct. Here, the cited sūtra texts and explanatory phrases are identical with the root sūtra; it seems to have been translated by the same person as the Ekottarāgama. The other catalogues all state that the translator is lost, and we provisionally follow this conclusion. The Sengyou Catalogue says: "Compiled by Kāśyapa and Ānanda." This too is not correct. In the first fascicle of the treatise, the views of foreign masters and the Sarvāstivādins are cited, from which we know it was not compiled by the two venerable ones.
