It is said that giving is of two kinds: there is giving out of faith, and there is giving out of fear. Establishing roots and attaining endurance is called giving out of faith. When forced by awe-inspiring power not from one's original mind, it is called giving out of fear. Faith accomplishes deliverance, while fear seeks merit; the distinction between the sacred and the worldly differentiates itself without awaiting words. That person said: Giving of head and eyes belongs to the seventh stage and above; giving of wealth belongs to the sixth stage and below. Those who fall back from this do not fall into birth and death, but will definitely reach nirvāṇa. How is this made clear? The Original Non-existence [chapter] of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra states in the middle that sixty bodhisattvas attained the way of an arhat; this is the matter.
