"Performing good and bad actions" means vigorously performing all good merits. As for "bad actions", it is like in the past when the youth Uttara reviled Kāśyapa Buddha, saying: "What Way does this bald-headed śramaṇa have? The Way is hard to attain; can he attain the Way?" Because of this, he later suffered six years of bitter toil before finally attaining the Way. In the bequeathed Dharma, the monks are constantly disputing; this is the retribution for speaking words that should not be spoken with the mouth. The six years of austerities were the retribution for practicing what should not be practiced. These are the bodily and verbal bad actions of the bodhisattva.
