The reason why Bhikṣu Dattaśūra was praised for delighting in emptiness is that this bhikṣu understood internal emptiness upon entering a room, and understood external emptiness upon leaving a room: internal emptiness corresponds to consciousness, and external emptiness corresponds to the body; entering the room he penetrated the emptiness of consciousness, and leaving the room he understood the emptiness of the body. Having already comprehended internal and external emptiness, all dharmas are likewise so. When this bhikṣu heard the teaching of emptiness expounded, he kept it stored in his heart; entering the room and seeing emptiness, he immediately penetrated body and consciousness. Other bhikṣus penetrate emptiness only after their fetters are exhausted, for the mind of emptiness is difficult to attain. Valued for attaining it first, he was therefore praised as foremost.
