4.18

「爾時其弟惡友太子作是念言：『善友太子，父母而常偏心愛念。今入大海採取妙寶，若達還者，父母當遺棄於我。』作是念已，往白父母：『今我亦欲隨從善友，入海採取妙寶。』父母聞已，答言：『隨意。道路急難之時，兄弟相隨，必相救護。』

"At that time, his younger brother, Prince Pāpamitra, thought to himself: 'Our parents have always loved and cared for Crown Prince Kalyāṇamitra with partiality. Now he is entering the great sea to retrieve wonderful jewels; if he succeeds and returns, our parents will cast me aside.' Having thought this, he went and addressed his parents: 'Now I also wish to follow Kalyāṇamitra and enter the sea to retrieve wonderful jewels.' His parents, having heard this, replied: 'As you wish. At times of urgent danger on the road, when brothers accompany one another, they will surely rescue and protect each other.'
