[The Buddha] replied: "Trade is permitted. However, he must not engage in five trades: first, he must not trade in livestock as an occupation. If he simply sells livestock that he himself owns, it is permitted, but he must not sell them to butchers. Second, he must not trade in bows, arrows, knives, and staves as an occupation. If he simply sells those he himself owns, it is permitted. Third, he must not sell alcohol as an occupation. If he simply sells what he himself owns, it is also permitted. Fourth, he must not press oil, because it kills many insects. Such is the way in India; from Jibin onward, wherever there are no insects at all in the sesame seeds, pressing oil is faultless. Fifth, he must not engage in the business of dyeing the five major colors, because it kills many insects. The foreign methods of dyeing with lac and the like kill many insects, and therefore are not permitted. It is said that the method of dyeing blue in the land of Qin also kills many insects, and falls into the category of the five major dyes."
