答曰：「夫救護者，救可救者。提婆達多罪惡深大，兼是定業，是故難救。」
Answer: "Now, those who give rescue and protection save those who can be saved. Devadatta's sins and evils were deep and great, and furthermore they were determinate karma; therefore, he was difficult to save."
