6.40

答曰：「歸依三世佛，以佛法身同故。歸依一佛，則是三世諸佛，以佛無異故。有云：『若歸依三世諸佛者，有諸天自說我迦葉佛弟子，我拘留孫佛弟子，如是七佛中各稱我是某佛弟子。以是因緣，正應歸依一佛，不應三世。』有云：『不應爾。何以故？如《毘沙門經》說：「毘沙門王歸依三寶，歸依過去未來現在佛。以是義故，應歸依三世諸佛。」』」

Answer: "It means taking refuge in the Buddhas of the three times, because the dharmakāya of the Buddhas is identical. Taking refuge in one Buddha is precisely [taking refuge in] all the Buddhas of the three times, because the Buddhas are not different. Some say: 'If one took refuge in the Buddhas of the three times, why do various devas proclaim of themselves: "I am a disciple of Kāśyapa Buddha," "I am a disciple of Krakucchanda Buddha," each among the seven Buddhas declaring: "I am the disciple of such-and-such a Buddha"? For this reason, one should properly take refuge only in one Buddha, not in the three times.' Others say: 'It should not be so. Why? As the Vaiśravaṇa Sūtra says: "King Vaiśravaṇa took refuge in the Triratna; he took refuge in the Buddhas of the past, future, and present." By this principle, one should take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times.'"
