"At that time, while his remaining life was not yet severed, the crown prince gave voice to an oath and vow: 'May the calamities and evils of past lives be completely eliminated through this, and from now on may I never dare to commit them again. Now I offer this body of mine to my parents to sustain their lives. May my parents constantly obtain the eleven remaining blessings: peaceful sleep, peaceful waking, seeing no evil dreams, protection by the devas, love by humans, the elimination of [punishment by] officials, thieves, and conspiracies, and good fortune in all undertakings. The remaining flesh and blood of my body I give to all these mosquitoes, gadflies, and the like, so that all may be fully satisfied. May I in a future life attain Buddhahood; when I become a Buddha, I pray that I may use the food of the Dharma to remove your hunger, thirst, and the grave illness of saṃsāra.' When he made this vow, the earth shook in six ways, the sun lost its brilliant radiance, all the beasts were terrified and scattered in flight, the great ocean surged with waves, Mount Sumeru, king of mountains, surged, sank, dipped, and rose, and even the devas of Trāyastriṃśa were greatly shaken. At that time, Śakra Devānām Indra, leading the devas of the desire realm, descended to Jambudvīpa to terrify Crown Prince Sujāti; transforming himself into lions, tigers, wolves, and the like, with eyes glaring and eye-sockets split wide, roaring loudly at the ground, leaping and pouncing, they came intending to seize and bite him."
