There was a brahmacārin who belonged to the faction of the six non-Buddhist teachers. This man was clever and eloquent, fully versed in the four Vedas, astronomy, astrology, calculation, divination of auspicious and inauspicious signs, changes of yin and yang, and he could foreknow the thoughts in people's minds. He was also a leader and guide of the multitude, revered and served by many. Yet he clung to false doctrines, and for the sake of gain and offerings destroyed the saddharma; with a heart full of jealousy, he slandered the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. He said to Ānanda: "Your master Gautama, a descendant of the Śākyas, claims to be good and noble, possessing great merit; but he has only an empty name without any real practice. Your master Gautama is truly an evil man! Barely one seven-day period after he was born, his mother died—how could he not be an evil man? He vaulted over the palace walls, causing his royal father such distress that he lost his mind, collapsed to the ground in fainting fits, and only regained consciousness after seven days when water was splashed on his face, crying aloud in grief and weeping bitterly: 'Why have I lost my only-begotten child today? The kingdom belongs to you. I have only you as my son; why do you abandon me and enter the deep mountains?' Your master Gautama was unmindful of kindness and showed no regard, proceeding straight ahead; therefore, you should know that he is an unfilial person! His royal father built palaces for him and took Gopā as his bride, yet he did not perform the marital rites of a husband, causing her to be consumed with sorrow; therefore, you should know he is a person devoid of kindness."
