"Then, after destroying the poisoned well, the donor went outside to observe. Seeing that the recipients of the charity had died from the poison taking effect, and with one voice they all said: 'Because this donor gave us poisoned food, he has caused us to lose our lives prematurely. Had we known beforehand that this food was poisoned, we would never have eaten it.' Hearing these words, the donor felt distress in his heart. It was like that wheel-turning king who, although he guided and transformed with the ten virtues, causing sentient beings to be born among humans and devas, and although they received such subtle and wondrous five desires and subtle and wondrous joys, still could not escape birth, old age, sickness, and death. At that time, the wheel-turning king immediately made an aspiration: 'I ought now to seek the unsurpassed Buddha-Dharma, the supramundane Dharma, so as to cause sentient beings to recite, practice, and become familiar with it, to leave birth and death far behind, and to attain nirvāṇa.'
