"Then the great king admonished and explained to his sons, preaching for them that all worldly affection must meet with parting. The sons replied: 'Although it is as our father the king says, our hearts are full of yearning and we cannot part. May the great king grant us a wish today: let the sons take their own bodies and lives and offer them to the great king, to serve as an offering to the brāhmaṇa master for the king.' The king said: 'My sons are young and do not yet understand. You cannot manage to accomplish such an offering. As for me now, having invited the great master from afar and promised him an offering, I must not break my word. As filial sons, you should not oppose your father's wishes; why do you now defy my intention?' When the princes heard these words, they roared and cried aloud, shaking the spirits of heaven and earth, and threw their whole bodies to the ground, like Mount Tai collapsing.
