At that time, the Tathāgata expounded the Dharma for ninety days for his mother, Lady Māyā, and the hosts of devas. In Jambudvīpa, for those ninety days they did not know where the Tathāgata was. Mahāmaudgalyāyana was foremost in supernatural powers, yet though he exhausted his supernatural powers searching in the ten directions, he too did not know; Aniruddha was foremost in the divine eye, yet though he gazed throughout the trichiliocosm of the ten directions, he too did not see him; and up to the five hundred great disciples, not seeing the Tathāgata, their minds harbored grief and distress. The great king Udayana longed for the Tathāgata, grief and sorrow piercing his heart, so he carved an image of all the marks of the Tathāgata's physical body using ox-head sandalwood, venerating, serving, and making offerings to it just as when the Buddha was present, without any difference.
