"Then the five hundred princes gradually grew up. Each prince possessed the strength of a thousand men. Whenever a neighbouring state rebelled and refused to submit, they went in person to subjugate them. Without raising the fourfold army, the realm was peaceful and secure; the heavenly deities rejoiced, the wind and rain arrived in their proper seasons, and the people were prosperous and thriving. At that time, the five hundred princes rode on renowned great elephants and toured the forests and wilderness, disporting themselves freely with immeasurable joy. Their parents loved and cared for them as if protecting their own eyes.
