"At that time, Lady Deer-Mother burned various renowned incenses, played wondrous music, and entered the rear garden every day to make offerings to these stūpas of the five hundred pratyekabuddhas. In front of the stūpas, she was sorrowful and unhappy, and said: 'Although I gave birth to these five hundred princes, and although they left home, not one among them was able to generate the mind of bodhi.' She then made a vow: 'The merit of my offering to these five hundred pratyekabuddhas and erecting five hundred stūpas to honour their relics—I dedicate it entirely and extend it to all sentient beings. May I in future lifetimes have no need to bear many sons who cannot generate the mind of bodhi; let me give birth to only one son who can generate the mind for the Path, leave home in his present life, and attain omniscience!'"
