"At that time, the cattle herdsman, following behind, caught sight of him and asked: 'Who are you?' Kalyāṇamitra thought to himself: 'I should not disclose the whole story and plainly recount what happened earlier, lest it cause my younger brother great suffering.' He replied: 'I am merely a blind beggar.' The cowherd looked over his entire body and saw that his physical marks were unusual. He said to him: 'My home is nearby; I will provide for you.' The cattle herdsman then took Kalyāṇamitra back to his house, gave him various kinds of food and drink, and instructed all the members of his household, young and old: 'You must attend to and serve this man just as you would me, without difference.' After a month or more had passed in this way, his household grew tired of it and said: 'Our family finances are not abundant; how can we constantly provide for this blind man?' When Kalyāṇamitra heard these words, he felt crestfallen. After that night had passed, when the next morning arrived, he said to the master of the house: 'I wish to leave now.' The master replied: 'What has displeased you that you wish to abandon me and leave?' Kalyāṇamitra replied: 'By the nature of guest and host, the situation cannot last long.' Kalyāṇamitra said: 'If you have affection for me, make a resounding zither for me. Send me to a place where there are many people, a great city or town.'
