Then Ajātaśatru followed his words, ended his father the king's life, and ruled over the kingdom of Vārāṇasī. Devadatta said to King Ajātaśatru: "I wish to harm and destroy the Tathāgata." Ajātaśatru said: "The Tathāgata possesses great spiritual power and knows in advance what people think; how could you now harm him? Moreover, the Tathāgata has great disciples—Śāriputra, Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Kimbala, Aniruddha, and others." Devadatta said to Ajātaśatru: "The king must now assist me." Ajātaśatru said: "What should be done?" He replied: "Great King! You should establish a restriction, not permitting clothing, bedding, food, or drink to be given to any of the bhikṣus." King Ajātaśatru proclaimed an order throughout: "If anyone gives clothing, bedding, food, or drink to the bhikṣus, their hands and feet shall be cut off." These great disciples and the entire great assembly were dwelling together with the Buddha on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa; begging for food in succession, they were utterly unable to obtain any, for one day up to seven days. Śāriputra and the other great disciples all used their spiritual powers to go to various regions to seek robes and beg for food.
