The Buddha said, "The dhyāna-practicing bhikṣu at that time was Kāśyapa Buddha today; the flea at that time was Devadatta today; the louse at that time was myself. For the sake of gain and offerings, Devadatta harmed me. Even down to today when I have attained buddhahood, he also, for the sake of gain and offerings, caused blood to flow from the Buddha's body, and entered hell alive. Devadatta has constantly harbored an evil mind to harm the Tathāgata; if one were to speak of these matters, kalpas would be exhausted without ending. Yet the Tathāgata has always, through the power of loving-kindness and compassion, looked upon him with pity and sorrow. It is because I encountered Devadatta that I quickly attained buddhahood; minding his kindness, I constantly bestow loving-kindness and pity upon him."
