Answer: “With one utterance, saying, ‘I will be a butcher,’ the wholesome precepts are immediately relinquished; with the second and third utterances, saying, ‘I will be a butcher,’ the unwholesome precepts are immediately obtained. It is also said: ‘Whenever wholesome precepts are relinquished, unwholesome precepts are immediately obtained. If a person endowed with wholesome precepts has not yet vowed himself to be a butcher, but merely out of greed for profit joins a butcher in acts of slaughter, at that time it is called violating wholesome precepts. If one seeks to relinquish wholesome precepts and seeks to obtain unwholesome precepts, one must vow oneself to be a butcher, and then unwholesome precepts are obtained.’ If one receives unwholesome precepts, they are obtained simply by self-vowing, not received from another. If one wishes to receive the precepts of unwholesome discipline for one day, two days, up to ten days, one year, or two years, depending on the duration of the vowed mind, they are obtained at will. Why is this? Because this unwholesome dharma accords with the flow of saṃsāra and has no meaning of supreme advancement; therefore, it is obtained immediately according to the occasion, unlike the precepts of wholesome discipline.”
