"The Buddha explained all dharmas in accordance with beings and appropriate to the time. Later, the disciples compiled the Dharma treasury, arranging it by category. When the Buddha at times laid down minor and major precepts, with remainder and without remainder, for the disciples, it was compiled as the Vinaya Piṭaka. When at times he spoke of the mutual arising of cause and effect, the various bondages, latent defilements, and karmic characteristics, it was collected as the Abhidharma Piṭaka. Preaching the Dharma for devas and worldly people according to the occasion was collected as the Ekottarika [Āgama], which is practiced by those who exhort and convert others. Preaching profound meanings for sentient beings of sharp faculties is called the Madhyama Āgama, which is practiced by scholars. Preaching various methods in accordance with dhyāna is the Saṃyukta Āgama, practiced by meditators. Refuting the non-Buddhists is the Dīrgha Āgama."
