The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'In the past, immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas ago, a buddha appeared in the world named Vipaśyin Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, Vidyācaraṇasaṃpanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā Devamanuṣyāṇām, Buddha, Bhagavat. He arose in the world and guided those with the affinity. When those with the affinity were exhausted, he passed his spirit into nirvāṇa. After the saddharma and semblance Dharma had ended, there was a kingdom named Vārāṇasī, where the people flourished and the land was bountiful. Its king always ruled the country in accordance with the true Dharma and did not oppress the people. In that country was a mountain named Mount of Sages and Immortals. On that mountain five hundred pratyekabuddhas constantly dwelt, and many ṛṣis endowed with the five supernatural powers also lived there. At that time, many birds and beasts came to take refuge there. There was a lion named Steadfast Vow, whose body had golden fur, possessed great majesty and power, and had strength equal to a thousand. When he let out a roar, flying birds dropped down and running beasts hid away. Wandering through the mountains and marshes, he saw a pratyekabuddha śramaṇa of pure comportment. Having seen him, he rejoiced in his heart; day after day he drew near to him, constantly hearing him recite the scriptures and expound the wondrous Dharma.
