大悲者，於諸世間晝夜六時，觀察世間孰苦孰樂、孰應調伏，隨應利樂，故名大悲。大乘所說如來十八不共法、三不護等，彼聲聞乘未曾聞故。

As for great compassion: during the six periods of the day and night throughout the worlds, observing the world to see who is suffering and who is happy, and who should be subdued, benefiting and delighting them in accordance with their needs; therefore it is called great compassion. The eighteen unshared qualities of the Tathāgata, the three non-protections, and so forth taught in the Mahāyāna were never heard in that Śrāvakayāna.
