約三際者，謂無明與行屬過去攝，名曰因支。識等五支屬現在攝，名曰果支。愛取有三屬現在攝，名曰未來因支。生老死二支屬未來攝，名曰果支。過去二支、現在八支、未來二支，故十二支。

According to the three time periods: ignorance and formations belong to the past, and are called causal links. The five links from consciousness onward belong to the present, and are called fruition links. The three—craving, grasping, and becoming—belong to the present, and are called future causal links. The two links of birth and old age and death belong to the future, and are called fruition links. The past has two links, the present has eight links, and the future has two links; therefore there are twelve links.
