According to the three defilements: ignorance, craving, and grasping—these three are defilements; formations and becoming—these two are karma: these are called the truth of the origin [of suffering]. The seven links from consciousness onward are suffering: this is called the truth of suffering. This is forward conditioned co-arising. As for reverse conditioned co-arising: when ignorance ceases, formations cease. The cessation of ignorance is the wisdom discerning selflessness, which is the truth of the path. If ignorance ceases, formations, which are the cause of rebirth, cease; because projecting karma ceases, the five links from consciousness onward cease. Because these cease, craving, grasping, and so forth that initiate subsequent karma cease. Because these cease, birth, old age and death, and so forth all cease as well: this is the truth of cessation. The Four Noble Truths have now been explained.
