The commentary states: In general, compiling all the various sūtras of the [Buddha's] entire teaching period, there are one hundred billion divisions; all such sūtras are subsumed under twelve divisions. What are the twelve? The first is sūtra, the second is geya, the third is vyākaraṇa, the fourth is gāthā, the fifth is udāna, the sixth is nidāna, the seventh is avadāna, the eighth is itivṛttaka, the ninth is jātaka, the tenth is vaipulya, the eleventh is adbhutadharma, and the twelfth is upadeśa; these are called the twelve. The fundamental sūtras upon which the Commentary on the Mahāyāna relies are either general or specific. 'General' means universally general; 'specific' means differentiated and distinct. The text of the Commentary on the Mahāyāna is narrow, its lines few, and extremely minute; why then does it universally rely on an ocean of immeasurable and boundless sūtras? Because it is like *vasa-eka-no* and like *tāratat-ti*; therefore there is no fault. As for the sūtras specifically relied upon, what is their number? What are their names? How many retinues does each have? A verse states:
