論曰：立義分中法門名數，總有三十三種差別。云何為三十三差別？所謂十六所入本法，十六能入門，及不二摩訶衍各差別故。何故摩訶衍成十六種？根本摩訶衍中開八種故，一心法界三大義中各開二種故。何故能入門成十六種？一心法界及三大義各二種故，或各開二種門故。是名為本數。

The Commentary states: In the division on establishing the meaning, the numbers of names of the Dharma gateways comprise thirty-three distinctions in total. What are the thirty-three distinctions? Namely, the sixteen root dharmas entered, the sixteen gateways that enter, and the respective distinctions of the non-dual Mahāyāna. Why does the Mahāyāna become sixteen kinds? Because eight kinds are unfolded within the fundamental Mahāyāna, and two kinds are unfolded within each of the three great meanings of the one-mind dharmadhātu. Why do the gateways that enter become sixteen kinds? Because the one-mind dharmadhātu and the three great meanings each have two kinds, or because two kinds of gateways are unfolded within each. These are called the fundamental numbers.
