The root text states: Generally speaking, the Mahāyāna has two kinds. What are the two? The first is dharma; the second is meaning. What is called 'dharma' refers to the minds of sentient beings; this mind subsumes all mundane dharmas and supramundane dharmas. Relying on this mind, the meaning of the Mahāyāna is revealed. Why? Because the tathatā aspect of this mind reveals the essence of the Mahāyāna, and the aspect of causes and conditions of arising and cessation of this mind can reveal the essence, characteristics, and function of the Mahāyāna itself. What is called 'meaning' has three kinds. What are the three? First, the greatness of essence, because the tathatā of all dharmas is equal, neither increasing nor decreasing; second, the greatness of characteristics, because the tathāgatagarbha is replete with immeasurable virtues of its nature; third, the greatness of function, because it can produce all mundane and supramundane wholesome causes and effects, because all Buddhas originally rode upon it, and because all bodhisattvas ride upon this dharma to arrive at the Tathāgata ground.
